The Barrel-Art Story

The Barrel-Art Story

Barrel-Art is a small American business that handcrafts home decor, barware, and furniture from authentic reclaimed wine and whiskey barrel wood. We've been doing this since 2013, out of a workshop in Virginia.

Every product we make starts with a real retired barrel — American white oak that spent years aging bourbon, whiskey, or wine before being decommissioned. We source our barrels from real distilleries and wineries, including producers of Buffalo Trace bourbon brands. That history is in the wood: the char, the grain, the color, the faint aroma that no manufactured material can replicate.

How It Started

The idea for Barrel-Art was born out of necessity. Founder Mike Prieto and his wife lost everything in a fire during a move to Europe. They needed furniture immediately, so Mike took up woodworking to build what they needed — and discovered he loved it.

Traveling through European wine country, Mike was inspired to build a bar from a barrel. He tracked down a French oak barrel from Bordeaux, built the piece, and the interest it generated was immediate. He started developing more ideas for furniture and barware made entirely from barrels, brought those ideas back to the United States, and after completing his business degree, opened Barrel-Art in 2013.

What We Make

We build across several categories, all from the same reclaimed source material:

Barware

Our whiskey and bourbon flight boards are our most popular products — barrel stave boards designed to hold Glencairn or tasting glasses for side-by-side pours. We also make beer flight boards, wine flights, coasters, and serving trays. Custom flights for restaurants with their own glassware are available too.

Home Decor

Barrel heads, staves, and hoops become home bar decor, side tables, lazy Susans, candle holders, and wall art. The steel rings from the barrels are welded into decorative wall pieces. No part of the barrel goes to waste.

Furniture

We build larger pieces including Adirondack chairs, fire pits, stools, benches, and barrel furniture for indoor and outdoor use. These are substantial, handcrafted pieces built to last.

Personalized & Engraved Gifts

Most of our products can be laser-engraved with names, initials, dates, or custom text. Our personalized gifts are popular for Father's Day, weddings, anniversaries, groomsmen gifts, and corporate orders.

DIY Supplies

For woodworkers and makers who want to work with the material themselves, we sell raw barrel staves, heads, and hoops — authentic reclaimed barrel wood ready for your own projects.

Who We've Worked With

Barrel-Art has supplied restaurants, hotels, and breweries across the country, including:

  • Froggies — Virginia Beach, VA
  • Commonwealth Brewery — Virginia Beach, VA
  • Marriott Hotels — Worldwide
  • Kona Grill — Nationwide
  • Outback Steakhouse — Nationwide

We've grown significantly through online orders and wholesale partnerships since 2013. Whether it's a single personalized gift or a bulk restaurant order, we build everything the same way: by hand, from real barrel wood, in Virginia.

Why Barrel Wood

American white oak is chosen for barrel-making because it's exceptionally dense, durable, and structurally sound. After years of aging spirits or wine, it develops character that no raw lumber can match: natural char variation, wine-stained grain, a subtle aroma, and a curved profile unique to barrel staves. Every piece we make carries that provenance.

We don't use veneers, composites, or decorative finishes meant to simulate reclaimed wood. The reclaimed quality is in the material itself.
